About Cookies

Cookies are small text files, often including unique identifiers, that are sent by web servers to web browsers, and which may then be sent back to the server each time the browser requests a page from the server. That will allow websites to recognize the user’s device or to identity and track users as they navigate different pages on a website, and to identify users returning to a website.

Cookies may be either “persistent” cookies or “session” cookies. A persistent cookie consists of a text file sent by a web server to a web browser, which will be stored by the browser and will remain valid until its set expiry date (unless deleted by the user before the expiry date). A session cookie, on the other hand, will expire at the end of the user session, when the web browser is closed.

1) Session Cookies

These are temporary cookies, which only exist for the period a user accesses the PSM website and which are automatically deleted from the user’s device at the end of each visit.

Session cookies enable the PSM website to keep track of the user’s movements within the website and prevent the user from being asked for the same information endlessly.

For example, when a user selects and adds products to its shopping cart, the session cookie remembers the selection and keeps the selected items in the shopping cart until the user is ready to check out. Without session cookies, the product selection could not be registered and the shopping cart would always remain empty.

2) Persistent Cookies

These are cookies which remain on the user’s device for a limited period of time after the visit to the PSM website. The PSM website uses two types of persistent cookies:

2.1. Personalization Cookies
Personalization cookies enable the PSM website to remember the user’s preferences for their next visit. For example, on the user’s first visit to the PSM website, the language will be set to German. If the user selects another language during this visit, the personalization cookie will store this information on the user’s device and the PSM website will automatically be presented in the preferred language during their subsequent visit.

2.2. Performance Cookies
Performance cookies are used to improve the navigation and security by analyzing anonymized information about the user, such as but not limited to their browser type, browser plugins version or operating system.

For example, if the information registered by the performance cookies reveals that a great number of users are relying on a browser not compatible with an website functionality, PSM will adapt this functionality to make it compatible with such browser. The PSM website uses the Piwik Analytics Cookie for this purpose.

Managing Cookies

By enabling cookies the user will receive the optimal experience from the PSM website. Nevertheless, it shall be the user’s sole choice to accept their use. The user is duly informed that by blocking all cookies they won’t be able to purchase any product from PSM and some part of the website may become inaccessible.
